Editorial policy
Last updated
Pet insurance is a money decision and a pet health decision, so we hold every page to one rule: no number without a source.
Sources we use, in order of preference
- Laws and regulators: the NAIC Pet Insurance Model Act, state statutes and insurance departments.
- Industry-wide data: the NAPHIA State of the Industry report.
- Peer-reviewed veterinary research and veterinary association guidelines (for example VetCompass studies and AAHA guidelines).
- Published quote and cost data from named third parties and insurers, always with the date and the policy profile behind it.
Each page lists the sources it uses, and the methodology lists all of them with known limitations. If we cannot find a reliable figure, we leave it out and say so rather than estimate it.
How content is produced and checked
- Pages are researched and written by Raúl Vaquerizo. Drafting may be assisted by AI tools; every figure and claim is then checked against the cited source before publication.
- Breed and state pages are generated from a structured dataset. Automated checks run on every build and block publication if a figure lacks a source, if a page is missing required elements, or if breed pages become too similar to each other.
- Content is not reviewed by a veterinarian or a licensed insurance professional. That is why health statements are limited to what the cited research reports, and why every page says the estimates are not veterinary or financial advice.
Independence and advertising
- We do not use affiliate links and do not accept payment from insurers for coverage, rankings or placement.
- Insurers are mentioned only factually, with a source and date.
- The site is funded by Google AdSense display ads. Ads are labeled, are placed outside the calculator, and advertisers have no influence on content.
Updates
The dataset is refreshed once a year after NAPHIA publishes its annual report, and pages show the date the data was last reviewed. We update sooner when a state passes a new pet insurance law or a source corrects its figures.
Corrections
If you find an error, email contact@petinsuranceestimator.com with the page and the correct figure or source. We review every report, fix confirmed errors promptly, and record data corrections in the methodology changelog.
